After carefully vetting all the candidates, a coalition of West Side residents and elected officials came together to endorse Chris Taliaferro for Alderman of the 29th Ward.
Currently a Sergeant in the Chicago Police Department with over 20 years of service, Taliaferro is also a former US Marine. He’s also a litigation attorney and one of the founding partners of the Nexus Legal Group, P.C.
The gathering was held at Mc Arthur’s restaurant where members of the coalition, which included Congressman Danny K. Davis, Water Reclamation District Vice President Barbara McGowen, Rev. Ira Acree and former 29th ward Alderman Issac ‘Ike’ Carothers, discussed the needs of the community along with their desire to have an independent voice in the city council.
Coalition members stressed that their decision was not based on personal bias but rather what they perceived as best for the community as a whole.
McGowen stated, “I did not know Chris Taliaferro. I knew some of the other candidates but friendship and acquaintances didn’t matter to me. What matters to me is what’s going on right here in the 29th ward. So Chris stood out amongst all the other candidates and I’m supporting him 100%
Current Alderman, Deborah Graham has been criticized for being to cozy with Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and blindly supporting his agenda. During the recent NAACP sponsored Aldermanic forum, Taliaferro and other candidates chose to highlight Alderman Graham’s voting record, which included votes in favor of the school closings, the highly unpopular red light cameras, and her support for the south side site for the Obama Presidential Library rather than voicing support for the West Side (Lawndale/UIC) bid.
The race is shaping up to pit Ald. Graham and her outright support for Mayor Emmanuel against those who oppose Emmanuel and are unhappy with his agenda.
And from the looks of it, the democratic process is alive and well in the 29th ward.
